A lone archeon, probably a stressed out one,
happened to absorb a bacterium,
perhaps with the aim of digesting it,
or maybe the bacterium was some sort of parasite,
but the bacterium not only survived
and thrived inside the protective environment of the archeon,
but it provided a surprising benefit for its host.
See the archeon was anaerobic: rather than metabolizing oxygen,
free oxygen was poisonous to it.
